Read Exodus Chapter 5. After your have read the Chapter, read the passages below to help you dive deeper into the Chapter. Conclude in Prayer.
“Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ ” And Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, nor will I let Israel go.” So they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.” Then the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your labor.” And Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are many now, and you make them rest from their labor!”- Exodus 5:1-5 NKJV
“We have previously seen that Pharaoh’s words:“I do not know the Lord”, reveals the darkness of ignorance in which the devil exists. The scholar Origen sees in Pharaoh’s complaint that Moses and Aaron are taking the people from their work (Ex. 5: 4), the complaint of the devil in every age. As many people believe that by dedicating their life to worship and ministry, the youth are wasting their energy. Pharaoh does not know except mud and straw, and wishes to bury everyone in them. So whoever sets his thought free to the spirituals is wasting his time and energy!” - Fr. Tadros Y. Malaty
How desperately Satan tries to keep us from our spiritual practices. Satan battles us, by telling us we are wasting our time attending services, praying in our homes, or reading the word of God. Instead, he reminds us constantly of all that still "needs to be done". He consumes us with the world, and fears that we would shift our attention from the earthly to the heavenly. Let us be alert to the wiles of the enemy.
Exodus 5: 6-21
“Indeed, before preaching starts, no affliction or temptations are known. No war begins before the horn blows; but once the horn of preaching blows, that will be the start sign of spiritual war, and the start of afflictions. ...Before the battles between virtue and evil start, evil live in inner peace within your soul. But once every evil stands trial, there would be an intense action, and a fierce war would develop within you, for “what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what Communion has light with darkness” (2 Corinthians 6: 14)? Therefore do not be troubled if we become abhorrent before Pharaoh as the smell of virtue is abhorrent before evil. " - ORIGEN
"In Moses and Aaron the law and the prophets are prefigured. A sick soul often murmurs to itself against the sacred words. After it has begun to hear and follow the heavenly words, the opposition of the Egyptian king—that is, the temptation of an evil spirit—rises up. So the physician should carefully make known to the soul that is making progress which temptations will attack it, so that it can carefully prepare itself for the snares of an evil spirit.” - PATERIUS
“So Moses returned to the LORD and said, “Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all." - Exodus 5:21-22
“MOSES COMPLAINS TO GOD - "The words that Moses speaks to the Lord are not words of contumacy or indignation but of inquiry and prayer. This fact is clear from the way the Lord answered him. For he did not accuse him of infidelity but revealed what he was about to do.” - AUGUSTINE
“How nice for a minister to enter into admonishment with the Lord when he feels as though his ministry has failed! God accepted that admonishment, and responded to the bitterness of his servant’s heart.”- Fr. Tadros Y. Malaty
Heavenly Father, Thank You for equipping us for the warfare that is before us. We know dear Lord that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Lord, empower us to take up your whole armor, that we may be able to withstand in the evil day, and do all we can to stand. Make us stand therefore, girding our waist with truth, putting on us the breastplate of righteousness, shodding our feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; and above all, give us the shield of faith with which we will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Place on us the helmet of salvation, and give us the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; that we may pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. Amen
